We are currently accepting applications for the above mentioned position. This is a unique opportunity for highly motivated students recently graduated from the University in Physics or related fields to gain research experience in one of DIPC’s high-profile research teams.
The role
We invite applications for a research position at the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC), funded through the RyGaQuS (Rydberg Gauge Quantum Simulator) project, part of the IKUR – Quantum Technologies funding program.
The selected candidate will play a central role in Work Package 3 (WP3): Setting up the Rydberg Atom Experimental Platform for the quantum simulation of gauge theories—models that underpin our understanding of fundamental forces and matter interactions.
The experimental platform will be based on ultracold dysprosium atom arrays, a novel approach in the field. The candidate will be expected to adopt a two-pronged strategy:
- Leverage expertise from an existing erbium-based platform in Innsbruck, gaining hands-on experience and insights. (WP3.1)
- Design and initiate the construction of a new experimental setup at DIPC, tailored for dysprosium. (WP3.1)
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and assembling the ultra-high vacuum (UHV) apparatus, including:
- Integration of a high-temperature effusive oven with a two-dimensional magneto-optical trap (2D MOT).
- Engineering the science chamber for receiving and cooling the pre-trapped atoms.
This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the foundation of a cutting-edge experimental platform in quantum simulation, in collaboration with leading international partners.
Desired background & competences
Knowledge of atom physics and quantum physics. Experience in experimental atomic physics as an advantage.

The center
About the team
The PhD project will be conducted in the Quantum technology Team at the DIPC, led by Prof. Francesca Ferlaino. The project is carried out in collaboration with the Dipolar Quantum Gas group at the University of Innsbruck (Austria) and the Institute of Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences together with Prof. Ferlaino and Dr. Manfred Mark (www.erbium.at). Students will benefit from research visits to both austrian institutions, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange.

Selection process
Applications received by the deadline will be evaluated by a Committee designed by the DIPC board on the basis of the following criteria:
- CV of the candidate (60%)
- Adequacy of the candidate’s scientific background to the project (20%)
- Reference letters (10%)
- Other: Diversity in gender, race, nationality, etc. (10%)
Evaluation results will be communicated to the candidates soon after. Positions will only be filled if qualified candidates are found.
The DIPC may revoke its decision if the candidate fails to join by the appointed time, in which case the position will be awarded to the candidate with the next highest score, provided it is above 50 (out of 100).
However, the selected candidate may keep the position if, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, the candidate duly justifies the reasons why he or she cannot join before the specified deadline, and as long as the project allows it.
