How to apply

We are currently accepting applications for a tenure-track position as an Ikerbasque Research Fellow. This is a unique opportunity for highly experienced experimental physicist to join the Quantum Science Lab in one of DIPC’s high-profile research teams.

The role

The DIPC, in collaboration with Ikerbasque (Basque Foundation for Science – http://www.ikerbasque.net), is seeking a highly motivated and experienced experimental physicist to join the Quantum Science Lab and take a leading role in the realization of a new experimental research line on atomic quantum computation with single dysprosium atoms in programmable optical tweezer arrays.

This new line of research will be embedded in the activities of the Quantum Science Lab at DIPC led by the PIs (F. Ferlaino and M. Mark), and aims to have close synergy with the local quantum theory group, as well as with national and international collaborators. This is a researcher position with the opportunity to lead the scientific and technical development of a cutting-edge quantum experiment from its early stages and contribute to shaping the scientific strategy and execution of the project. We offer a Ikerbasque Research Fellow position based in Donostia-San Sebastián, with full institutional support to establish a stable and impactful research program and contribute in shaping the scientific strategy and execution of the project.

Desired background & competences

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A PhD in experimental quantum physics, AMO physics, quantum optics, or a closely related field (to be completed by December 2022).
  • Proven experience in designing and building up ultracold quantum-gas experiments • Experience in two and many-valence electron atom, Rydberg physics, and/or quantum gas microscopy as an advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and carry out advanced experimental research in atomic quantum atomic physics.
  • Strong technical proficiency in laser systems, vacuum technology, and electronic control systems.
  • Experience in supervising and mentoring graduate and/or undergraduate students in an experimental research environment.
  • Excellent publication record in high-quality international peer-reviewed journals.
  • Willingness to develop and lead competitive research proposals for international funding programs (e.g., ERC, Horizon Europe, national agencies). Excellent communication skills and a strong motivation to work in an international, collaborative research environment.
  • Commitment to contributing to a long-term, high-impact scientific vision, and to collaborating closely with the principal investigator in shaping the strategic direction of a major quantum experiment.
  • Very good command of English, both written and spoken, for effective scientific communication and collaboration.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Take a central role in the planning, construction and daily experimental operations, including instrumentation, maintenance, development and optimization of a new experiment on dysprosium-based reconfigurable tweezer array.
  • Develop techniques to deterministically assemble defect-free arrays of single atom, which can be used for quantum information processing.
  • Develop and expand a new research line focused on quantum computation and information processing, and present it within the broader quantum community, in accordance with the strategic objectives.
  • Responsible for the daily scientific and technical operation of the quantum information and computation line within the Quantum Science Lab at DIPC
  • Mentor and co-supervise PhD students, postdocs, and junior researchers involved in the experimental effort.
  • Actively contribute to scientific publications, funding proposals, scientific reporting, and dissemination activities.
  • Proactively develop strategic partnerships and collaborations with national and international scientific groups, both theoretical and experimental.
  • Contribute to building a cohesive and innovative research environment within the Quantum Science Lab and the wider DIPC community.
  • Managing the administrative tasks related to the laboratory operations while the overarching scientific direction will be jointly defined with the lab PI, the position offers significant autonomy, creative freedom, and leadership opportunities in shaping the evolution of the experiment and its impact.

Working conditions

  • Estimated annual gross salary: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and consistent with our pay scales
  • Target start date: 2025/12/31

We provide a highly stimulating research environment, and unique professional career development opportunities.

We offer and promote a diverse and inclusive environment and welcomes applicants regardless of age, disability, gender, nationality, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity.

The center

DIPC is a research center whose mission is to perform and catalyze cutting-edge research in physics and related disciplines, as well as to convey scientific culture to society. Located in Donostia / San Sebastian (Basque Country, Spain), DIPC was born from a strategic alliance of both public institutions and private companies. Since 2008 DIPC is a 'Basque Excellence Research Center' (BERC) recognized by the Basque Government's Department of Education. In 2019, DIPC was also recognized as a "Severo Ochoa" Excellence Center by the Spanish Research Agency.

About the team

This new line of research will be embedded in the activities of the Quantum Science Lab at DIPC led by the PIs (F. Ferlaino and M. Mark), and aims to have close synergy with the local quantum theory group, as well as with national and international collaborators.

How to apply

Interested candidates should submit a single PDF including:

  • A motivation letter describing their experience, research interests, and expectations. The letter should also include their preferred and earliest possible start date.
  • A detailed CV including both a max. of 3 highlighted Publications (1–3) with Short Context and a full list of publications.
  • A brief summary of relevant experimental expertise. The PDF should also include the names and contact information of two referees.

Reference letters must be sent directly by the referees to jobs.research@dipc.org by the application deadline. It is the candidate’s responsibility to ensure that the letters are submitted on time.

The reference of the specific opening to which the candidate is applying should be stated in the subject line, and the application must be received before the application deadline.

The DIPC and Ikerbasque are committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse research environment. Applications from women are especially encouraged.

Although candidates are welcome to contact the project supervisors to know further details about the proposed research activity, please be aware that the application will be evaluated only if it is submitted directly to the email address listed below as application email.

Selection process

Applications received by the deadline will be evaluated by a Committee composed of members of the DIPC and Ikerbasque boards on the basis of the following criteria:

  • CV of the candidate and commitment letter
  • Relevant experimental expertise
  • Reference letters
  • Other: Diversity in gender, race, nationality, etc.

Evaluation results will be communicated to the candidates soon after. Positions will only be filled if qualified candidates are found.

The DIPC may revoke its decision if the candidate fails to join by the appointed time, in which case the position may be awarded to the candidate with the next highest evaluation.

However, the selected candidate may keep the position if, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, the candidate duly justifies the reasons why he or she cannot join before the specified deadline, and as long as the project allows it.
